'Material Matters: The Power of the Medium'

East Wing X, The Courtauld Institute of Arts, London

20th January 2012 - 13th July 2013

East Wing X are proud to present our exhibition Material Matters, which will be a celebration of both established and emerging contemporary artists who use pioneering media or re-interpret traditional forms of representation.

The present East Wing committee is the tenth of its kind and the exhibition will mark the twentieth anniversary of East Wing. The exhibition will also coincide with the London 2012 Olympics and in this time Somerset House will be a focus of Olympic celebration. 'Material Matters' will provide an exciting cultural dimension to the events taking place.

The exhibition can be viewed during the day-to-day life of the Institute, and during monthly public open weekends. There will also be a dynamic programme of events and talks running throughout the duration of the exhibition.

'ExLab 2'

National Trust Estate Purbeck & Bournemouth, Dorset, UK

June 2012

Mat Chivers has been specially commissioned to make a site-specific temporary artwork in response to the coastline of the National Trust Estate at Purbeck Dorset. The resulting artwork will be sited in Bournemouth on the south coast of England as part of the Cultural Olympiad 2012.

ExLab is investigating the earth science and coastal processes revealed along the Jurassic Coast through the imaginative insight of visual artists. A series of artists' research residencies will lead to the creation of new temporary artworks developed in response to places and communities. These will be shown in buildings, galleries and the open air along the Dorset and East Devon coast path in 2012.
